In the Interest of Shoes

Music is played mostly in his absence but Eric feels it’s sacred energy through the crowd and through the city into steel and concrete through fibers and hair into his heart and out through his eyes as an exposure to the scene. Similar to the way mushrooms communicate with vegetation in the same biome – with chemistry – not chemicals but love that excites love into attraction with no limits. 

The night before he laid down to the screaming of his name in the dream once again. He had to ask. 

“Hey Jer,” Eric smiled. “Do you think if I cut off my middle finger I’d have more in common with Jerry Garcia?”

“You’d have one thing in common with Jerry Garcia,” Jer quipped back without missing a beat. 

“There’s only one thing better than one finger, Jer, and that’s two fingers,” so up went the double birdie in the interest of kindness. 

Jer’s a great guitar player in his own right and one day Eric had told Jer that someone said he plays too many notes and so he had to tell them “Jer plays too many notes because he can… just like a fish breathes underwater because they can.” And so Jer made up a vocal jam that night about everybody else in the room not being able to breathe underwater and none of us could argue with that. 

“In those days, Eric was neither with us or against us, in the disinterest of fairness, he was us, without being one of us,” Jer informed the puzzled critic. 

“You see, when you take the lifetime of a shoe and put it in the bridge of your song by the time you get to the meat within the chorus the shoe becomes a new verse for the song.”

Okay. You just keep trying to explain the lifetime of a shoe in the image of rock and roll and I’m just going to wait around until women get hotter. In both scenarios I’m not going to have to wait very long since both pursuits are here upon us.

The pursuit for the lifetime of a shoe is different from the pursuit of beautiful women in that nobody knows how to express to a beautiful woman the importance of taking care of your shoes in the interest of fondness for having only one pair.
