My cat ventured outside today for the first time. The facade of the building is more round than inside our sterile, gray apartment. She stuck out like a midwestern cookie-cutter cowboy stooped on the side of a white stucco saloon. My wise cat, with her incredible skill to walk through walls, didn’t make it very far outside. There are no sharp edges to manipulate, like inside our apartment where she discovered depth perception and the ability to see through walls, so she had to focus on creating an edge for herself. With one eye closed and one eye open focusing on the silhouette of the curved wall it now appeared angular. Creating a silhouette, she tried to see through the wall but its curvature and the illusion of an edge made it impossible to focus on two things at once with one eye closed so the edge remained a silhouette. The result was she wouldn’t attempt to walk through like she does inside our apartment. She didn’t know that in the world beyond, with its curves and color, to create an edge when nothing stands in our way is unnecessary. This time she could not trick her mind into discovering new territories and retreated back into the building.
